Parity
I know I haven't been around much, but my real estate career and real life has kept me quite busy.

But something amazing happened today that has prompted me to comment.

Today, the Canadian dollar reached parity with the US dollar. Briefly today, a $1 CAN = $1.0003 USD.

In the past 5 years, the Canadian dollar has risen 62% against the US dollar.

5 years ago, GoO started to run into financial difficulties ... partly due to the strength of the loonie, partly due to my inability to run the company profitably. I kept holding on, though, thinking it would get better.

Imagine if I had tried to hold on until now: a 62% loss in income after converting US sales to Canadian income.

Let's say that GoO grossed $500,000 USD each year in business. That's close enough for illustration purposes.

$500,000 USD used to give the company $810,000 CAN. Now it would give us only $500,000 CAN.

Without any loss of sales or decreased production, GoO may have lost over THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND dollars a year if we kept trying to publish.

I love GoO. I love BESM. But folding the company was the best decision I could have possibly made.

I only wish that I saw the light a couple of years earlier and managed to exit the gaming industry with more grace than I was forced to do.

Though sad about the loss of a company very dear to me, I and my family are much, much happier now. I wish I could have the best of both worlds.

Now if there was just a way for Arthaus to keep the BESM line running strong....

Thanks for listening.

I'm glad you've gained enough distance on this to see the folding of GoO with some perspective. Yeah, the fact that it's gone sucks, and yes, you could have handled it better, but with things the way they are it really was for the best. And you were doing your best in a bad situation.

Is there no way for Arthaus to keep BESM going?

I'm not privy to Arthaus's plans for BESM, but I hope that something comes of it. It really is a nifty set of rules with a great multiverse outline.

FAN contributions

Is there anything we, the FANS can do? I have already created the Resource Site, we have an 'unofficial' errata section and I even have created individual PDF files of all the templates from the core book I recreated with the corrections from the errata page materials done up for my own personal use.

I'm even working on my own GM screen (albeit slowly, as I am a lazy bastard these days).

Obviously nothing can be sold, but what about distributing freely? I could have a PDF file of the fixed templates compiled and ready in an hour or two and with a couple of weeks, a working GM screen (again, with corrected data on it) but would ArtHaus come and beat me with large sticks if I share it with other fans?

a little problem

An email I recently received

[quote]Hello Ryan -

There are no plans to do a reprint or PDF version of BESM third at this time. There are limitations on the contract we negotiated with Guardians to see that the 3rd edition did reach print with the release last year.

I am sorry.

Re: a little problem

The good news is that you can now get a PDF version from Drive thru RPG.
The bad news is that White Wolf has a long history of not reprinting anything (especially under their Arthaus brand) ever. Even if you offer them fat sacks of cash.

I could rant for awhile about it, but that's not appropriate on somebody else's blog. Needless to say, White Wolf had redeemed itself in my eyes for picking up BESM, just to sink back into it's usual ways.

Re: a little problem

Yeah, now the BESM fans have been treated the same way as the Trinity fans.

Sadly, White Wolf seems to have dropped Arthaus entirely, focusing instead on the profitable lines. Can't say I blame them that, economics and all, but it still sucks. Some of the better games of the last decade came out of there.

Sad

It makes me sad to think about what may have been. I spent a larger part of my early role playing career playing besm 1. 2 was great but sometimes was a bit more than i wanted. I prebought 3 and when i got it, was not disapointed. If anyone derserves to win the lottery, I hope its you so you can get besm back! In fact, I would almost say that if I won the lottery, I would give you a million towards the rebirth (and try to get the rights back).

Re: Sad

Man...this must be a difficult time for you, Mark. I mean, even after having shut down that company..to know that your baby is in their hands must be frustrating. Especially when things seem so quiet, according to the comments before mine.

I wish I had a lot of money. Like the guy said before me, I'd toss it your way without a second thought. You muscled your way into the system of publishing, and you made a name for yourself with something innovative...merging two worlds that are rarely merged, or if they are, not nearly as well as you merge them.

I won't say I agree with every choice, but all the same, I was pretty damn sad to hear the company was going down. Even if White Wolf eventually decides to do something awesome with BESM (or..do something at all...), and even though I'll still continue to buy the product, to me it still won't be the same. You guys were incredible, and I love your system through all of it's stages.

I just hope this won't be the end of you, Mark. I want to hear from you in the future, to see you publish more, to see things good going your way.

You're good people.
Walker Pennington.

How might BESM be revived?

Question... who actually owns BESM now? I know WW bought the rights to the BESM3 book, right, but they don't own the game... or do they?

Second question... according to popular wisdom, you can copyright an explination of a game's rules, but you can't copyright the rules themselves. Classic AD&D rules were republished in a game called OSRIC, and there's talk on RPG.net of other discontinued game systems being given new life, reinterpretted and published in in new versions and creating a new market for supplements. Perhaps someone could do the same thing to BESM?

How might BESM have avoided death?

But then, if you really wanted to keep BESM going you should have put Tri-Stat under an open lisense before GoO shut down.

Re: How might BESM have avoided death?

This begs the question: Who does own the rights to Tri-Stat, now? Did that go to White Wolf, was it sold to creditors, or is it without ownership?

We need a forum!

The BESM line might have ended, but someone should at least create a forum for BESM fans.
There seems to be a number of BESM fans around, but no place to meet.

...heck I might primarily be a GURPS fan, but I think I might start one just for the sake of it.

Re: We need a forum!

...and a few hours later I did.

I've created the "Unofficial BESM Forum". You can find it here: http://unofficialbesmforums.freeforums.org/index.php

I will try to invite people from a couple of boards and see if I can get things running over there.

If all things go well we might piece together the BESM community again. :)

Nearly a year since your last post...

Good to see I'm not the only one who's interested in seeing what you're up to. I'm glad your real estate work is going well (I hope that's what busy means, and hoping this has continued for the past year) for you and your family. You and your company created a great game with BESM, I was well chuffed with 3rd edition. One of those books you just read through and think "can't wait to get into this one." I'm just printing out a small squillion of your "ink-cartidge chewing, pastel explosion" (heh) character sheets to run a Chinese Ghost Story game in a week or so's time.

Don't discount the possibility of being a freelance game writer, though, hopefully your work life isn't taking too much of your free time from you. It would be great to see a continuation of what you wanted from your Anime Megaverse. Take care, all the best.

Re: Nearly a year since your last post...

Yeah, BESM is still my favorite system to play games with. I've been using all of the old books for years and may do so for years yet.

Re: Nearly a year since your last post...

Here too. I was never able to get a copy of BESM 3 before they were gone (and I don't do PDF, not with my eyes), so I still run with BESM 2, which is still a dang good system.

Hoping the game does well

I love this game. Once in a while I scan the web for news. I hope to find as many BESM rpg (http://www.squidoo.com/BESM) sites as I can. In the meantime, I'm making my own fanpage.
